Don't Apply For Airline Credit Cards At the Airport

Walking through most airports, travelers will often find representatives of banks handing out applications for airline credit cards. It is difficult to blame them for this practice, as they are simply choosing the location with the highest concentration of airline passengers. In fact, some airlines have even recruited their in-flight staff to encourage passengers to apply for their affiliated credit cards. At the same time, travelers should consider whether or not submitting these applications in-person makes the most sense.

As passengers walk through the airport, they may hear someone ask them if they would like to earn bonus miles or some other type of reward in exchange for their credit card application. While the offer may seem like a worthwhile one, there really are few ways to determine if it is, in fact, the best one available. Applicants for reward credit cards should always expect a generous sign up bonus in exchange for the bank’s opportunity to earn their business.

Furthermore, there may be several different offers available for a particular card at any given time. Some online offers may feature higher rewards, lower rates, or a more generous package of perks. The key to savvy credit card use is sifting through these different offers to find the one that most closely meets the needs of the applicant.

Unfortunately, travelers on the move do not have the ability to compare different offers for a particular card, let alone competing products from other banks and their affiliate partners. It is for this reason that travelers are better off waiting until they reach their destination before comparing and applying for credit card offers. In this way, they can analyze multiple cards, in order to find the most advantageous offer or the best product. When being encouraged to apply for a new card in person, applicants should be aware that the kiosk attendants are probably working on commission in order to obtain competed applications. Therefore, it will be difficult for potential new applicants to make the best decisions when they are being subjected to high pressure sales tactics.

Applying for a credit card is an important decision. By forgoing the opportunity to make an in-person application at a kiosk, applicants can take the time to apply for the right card in the privacy of their own homes.
