Check Your Credit Score and Credit Reports

Although catchy (or is that really annoying) jingles may have led you to believe otherwise, the only place to get a free credit report is www.annualcreditreport.com. Once a year, you can receive all three of your credit reports for free from this service. Unfortunately, www.annualcreditreport.com does not provide free access to your credit scores. In fact, no one provides truly free access to your credit scores.

Knowing your credit score, and improving it, is essential if you want to get the best rates on everything from mortgages to credit cards. Yes, seeing your credit reports can help you fix errors, but it doesn't provide nearly as much insight into how lenders view you as your credit score does.

While most companies charge a fee to view credit scores, some companies provide no cost trials to credit monitoring services that give you access to your credit scores. Many of these services include useful tools that you can use to improve your credit score as well identity theft protection. Below you compare offers from companies that provide these services. With most, you can sign up and see your score in a matter of minutes.

Credit Score and Credit Monitoring Product Review
IDENTITY GUARD®: With a 30 day free trial of IDENTITY GUARD, you get access to all three of your credit scores, identity theft protection, and a very good suite of tools that you can use to estimate how repaying debt, opening a new credit card, or having a credit limit reduced can impact your credit score. After the trial expires, a monthly fee of $17.99 applies.
Equifax Credit Watch Gold™ with 3-in-1 Monitoring & FREE FICO® Score: With a 7 day free trial of this service, you can view your FICO®. This service includes up to $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance and costs $14.95 a month should you choose to continue.
FreeCreditScore.com: Because of new FTC regulations, you won't be hearing the freecreditreport.com song anymore, but I'm sure a freecreditscore.com song is in the mix. With this offer, you get a 7 day trial of Experian Triple Advantage®, which provides you with your Experian credit score.
TrueCredit.com 3-Bureau Monitoring: TrueCredit.com does not offer a free trial. For $14.95 a month, you can access your credit scores from Transunion, Equifax, and Experian, get up to $25,000 ID theft insurance and notification within 24 hours of critical changes to any of your credit reports.
Editor's Note: The four credit monitoring services listed above are the only ones I have experience with, and IDENTITY GUARD® is the service that I use personally to monitor my credit and to research how various factors can impact a credit score when researching this topic for articles. However, there are a lot of companies that offer these services and, if interested, you can learn more about them on the additional credit services page.
